There are mainly three types of large scale / bulk storage systems for liquefied gases (LNG, LOX, LIN, LAR, LC2H4, LN2O...): single, double, or full containment.
A single containment tank consists of a stainless-steel inner tank and a carbon-steel outer tank. The inner tank is designed to hold liquid and is liquid-tight. The outer tank is designed to retain and protect the insulation, but can not contain liquid if the inner tank leaks. A dike or bund wall around the tank can also be built to retain the leakage but it takes up more floor area.
A double containment tank has a liquid and vapor-tight primary tank built inside a secondary tank that is liquid-tight. This secondary liquid tank is liquid-tight but not vapor-tight.
A full containment tank consists of a liquid-tight primary tank (inner tank) and a liquid and vapor-tight secondary tank (outer tank). Both tanks can independently contain the product. The secondary tank controls vapor release in the event of a primary product leak. Another design feature is thermal corner protection (TCP). TCP protects the floor-to-wall joint on the outer tank and help thermally isolate the joint from the cold liquid in case of inner tank leakage. Under this category there're mainly two types: bimetal full containment tank, consisting of a SS inner tank and a SS outer tank, and PC (prestressed concrete) full containment tanks, consisting of a SS inner tank and a concrete outer tank.
The atmospheric cryogenic storage system can be used in LNG facilities, in manufacture industry for liquefied oxygen/nitrogen/argon for boilers and smelters, for medical use and waste treatment etc. When the right type is selected for a specific application, performance requirements can be established.
