Liquid (liquefied) Argon (LAR) Storage System - Single Containment Tank

2015 05/08

Liquid (liquefied) argon, LAR, can be stored in a large scale single containment storage tank, typically, an atmospheric cryogenic bimetal tank, consisting of an inner tank of stainless steel, an outer tank of carbon steel, and an interlayer of the annular space filled with insulation material (perlite). The cryogenic liquids can be well stored in this way with a daily evaporation rate lower than 0.06%.

Pressure safety system:

The storage tank is equipped with a complete safety system: For the inner tank, manual venting valve, automatic venting valve, and two sets of breathing valves (pressure relief valve and vacuum relief valve, switchable with a three-way valve). When the pressure in the inner tank reaches 24 kPa, pressure relief valve is activated; when the pressure drops to -0.5 kPa, the vacuum valve is activated. One of the two sets of breathing valves must be operational to avoid equipment damage and personal injury.

The vacuum relief valve is only activated under emergency conditions, while under normal conditions, the self-pressurization system can restore the pressure by inputting nitrogen.

Stainless steel corrugated piping is adopted on the outer tank, connecting piping from the top of the inner tank, to compensate the stress caused by temperature difference.
