Bangladesh's state-owned oil company PetroBangla signed its first LNG import agreement, a 15-year deal with Qatar's RasGas to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) starting in Sept. 2018. The country has a increasing domestic fuel supply gap for power generation.
Under the deal, RasGas will supply 1.8 million tons of LNG per year for the first five years, and 2.5 million tons per year for the next 10 years. Due to the lack of domestic gas production, the government has been promoting the use of LPG in residential and commercial areas over the past few years. Seeking to almost double its power capacity to 24,000 megawatts by 2021. Bangladesh is planning to tap the currently cheap and plentiful global LNG supplies and invest heavily in importing the fuel.
